Spider-Man on PS4 remixes comic publication lore fora brand new superhero story
Caution: mild spoilers below for Spider-Man for the PS4
Similar to the latest Spider-Man films, the PS4 game makes the smart proceed to skip over Peter’s origin tale entirely. It’s a safe wager that if you’re picking right up a Spider-Man game in 2018, you almost certainly already know the fundamentals: Uncle Ben, radioactive spider, “With great power comes great responsibility,” etc. The overall game doesn’t just excel by breaking from the typical Spider-Man timeline. In addition, it remixes existing Spider-lore to produce something fresh that shakes up a few of the character associations that fans attended to learn and love on the decades.
Many of these changes don’t impact Peter. In the end, it’s still a Spider-Man game, which means that Peter has to be still, well, Spider-Man, as he quips and flips his way through the town. But almost everyone surrounding Peter has changed. How Peter pertains to those changes is why is the overall game so interesting.
One of the primary changes is Peter’s romantic relationship with Mary Jane Watson, who’s historically been relegated to the role of the damsel in stress for Peter to save lots of. That’s false in Spider-Man for PS4, though; in this game, she’s a playable personality in her own right, breaking tales as a reporter for the Daily Bugle and frequently clashing with Peter’s overprotectiveness as she attempts to do her job.
Another major change is the shift of Teacher Otto Octavius, who turns up much less the iconic villain but as Peter’s mentor at the poorly funded Octavius Industries lab. (It wouldn’t be considered a Spider-Man tale if Peter didn’t have money problems of some kind.) It can help tie Peter as well as a rather improbable ally as they focus on creating prosthetic limbs for troops. Of course, anyone who’s seen a Spider-Man property will probably think where that romantic relationship leads later on.
Popular Spider-Man villains like Electro, Scorpion, and Rhino all make token appearances, and the overall game helps it be clear that Spidey has recently handled them before. For instance, when Spidey battles Shocker, he teases the villain by using his real name. Preventing the tiresome backstories provides game additional time to concentrate on less familiar character types like Mr. Negative or Tombstone, providing players with new enemies to handle that they haven’t already observed in countless video gaming, comics, and movies over time.
And like the existing crop of comics or the upcoming Spider-Man: In to the Spider-Verse movie, Spider-Man’s world also features Kilometers Morales (who followers will recognize as the favorite bearer of the Spider-Man name in Marvel’s alternative world Ultimate comics). Mls isn’t Spider-Man here, but he's a playable personality, and his life eventually intersects with Peter’s in decidedly non-superheroic ways that provide some of the more grounded, human occasions of the overall game.
There are smaller items, too: J. Jonah Jameson has shifted to a podcast, and he’s morphed into Alex Jones, if Alex Jones only really hated Spider-Man (who's a menace, Jameson will perhaps you have know). It seems like a reasonable place for the brash editor to end up fairly, eight years on. Aunt Could also has a larger role, working at the FEAST shelter that ties her alongside the villainous Mister Negative.
Plus, Spider-Man doesn’t disregard the recent. The backstory of the Peter Parker’s activities is a backdrop for the existing storyline, with collective items and lines of dialogue providing the backstory for players who are thinking about hunting everything down. Things such as mementos from fights with traditional villains like Sandman, important occasions in MJ and Peter’s relationship, or relics from Peter’s previously Spider-Man times all arrive, giving a feeling of a more substantial world beyond the game.
Spider-Man probably won’t be the last we’ll see of the world’s webslinger, either. Marvel has recently said that the Insomniac-designed Spidey will be becoming a member of the comics in the upcoming Spidergeddon crossover event. And given the positive reception of the PS4 name and the MCU-style post-credit moments that practically guarantee a component two, Sony is going to be eying a sequel down the road soon.
